SUMMARY:Keeping Our Stories Alive: Processing LGBTQ2S Histories with Jeffrey Canton
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Storytelling Toronto\, The ArQuives is thrilled to present Keeping Our Stories Alive: Processing LGBTQ2S Histories with Jeffrey Canton. \nPreserving personal stories of unique experiences of being LGBTQ2S is one of the most important ways to contribute to the history of the Queer and Trans community in Canada. This course offers participants techniques to take a memory or anecdote about their experience as LGBTQ2S and craft it into a polished performance piece. Participants will learn how to shape and enhance their story and give it the power it deserves as a contribution to our history as LGBTQ2S. Participants will be encouraged to donate their stories to The ArQuives as well as participate in a final concert where participants will share with their guests. \nThis course is being presented in person at The ArQuives during the following dates and times. \nFriday\, August 18 (6 pm- 10 pm)\nSaturday\, August 19 (10 am-4 pm)\nSunday\, August 20 (12 pm- 5 pm)\n \nJeffrey Canton\, a storyteller of traditional and personal tales for over three decades\, identifies as LGBTQ\, and much of his work focuses on his intersectional identity. He is a core member of Queers in Your Ears\, Toronto’s oldest LGBTQ2S storytelling collective. Jeffrey has trained at the Toronto Biennial of Art in conflict resolution\, anti-oppression\, and anti-racism and uses this training to create a safe space for all participants. \nThe last day to register for this class is Monday\, August 14th at 5 pm.

SUMMARY:Len and Cub: Exhibition Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the Toronto launch of the Len and Cub exhibition on November 2\, 2023\, from 7-9. \nLeonard “Len” Keith (1891-1950) and Joseph “Cub” Coates (1899-1965) were two young men living in the rural village of Havelock\, New Brunswick\, who formed a relationship during the early 20th century. While keeping their attraction for each other hidden\, they privately captured their relationship via photographs – one of the oldest known surviving photographic records of a same-sex couple in the Maritimes. These remarkable archival images\, held at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick\, are as important socially and historically as they are unique in the photographic canon of eastern Canada. \nCurated by Dusty Green and Meredith J Batt and initially organized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the NB Queer Heritage Initiative from April 2\, 2022 – July 29\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Zine workshop\, February 17th
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free zine workshop. Participants will learn about the history of zines and their role in DIY and queer culture\, featuring examples from The ArQuives collections! \nParticipants will also learn how to create and reproduce their very own zines with collage and craft materials provided – we hope to see you there! \n\nEmma Awe is a PhD candidate in Public History at Carleton University\, located on the unceded traditional territories of the Algonquin. Using artistic methods\, their dissertation asks how queer punk zines configure into the historic emergence of queer radical politics across Canada from 1980-2000. In educational\, not-for-profit\, and community settings\, Emma has worked with youth to explore queer and trans pasts through arts-based experiential learning. They draw inspiration from historic queer and radical media to dream new worlds in their own creative practices. (website)\n\nClara Lynas: is a Scarborough based zine artist\, she studied printmaking at OCAD University and uses it as a medium to tell stories in book form. She believes the body of the book is an integral part of the story it tells and strives to make a living\, breathing zines with a great physical presence. She would like to live more out of love than out of spite.\n\n\nSome materials will be provided\, but attendees are encouraged to bring personal or specific materials such as magazine clippings\, art supplies\, and stickers. For questions\, please email Volunteer@arquives.ca

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Maurice Vellekoop - I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together
DESCRIPTION:Join The ArQuives\, Toronto Public Library and Random House Canada for the book launch of Maurice Vellekoop’s autobiographical graphic novel\, I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together; an epic graphic memoir about a queer illustrator surviving his intensely Christian childhood in 1970s Toronto. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase. \nIf you identify as a person with a disability and require an accessibility accommodation to participate in this program\, please contact Accessibility Services by email\, accessibleservices@tpl.ca\, or voicemail\, 416-393-7099\, to make a request. Please contact us at least three weeks in advance. \nPresented in partnership with Random House Canada and Toronto Public Library \nMAURICE VELLEKOOP was born in 1964 in a suburb of Toronto. A prolific artist and illustrator\, he has worked non-stop for the last three decades. I’M SO GLAD WE HAD THIS TIME TOGETHER is an enthralling portrait of what it means to be true to yourself\, to learn to forgive\, and to be an artist. An astonishing\, epic graphic memoir in the spirit of Fun Home by Alison Bechdel and Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe\, Maurice’s Vellekoop is the rarest of things: moving\, funny\, and triumphant. \n“Maurice Vellekoop’s beautiful graphic memoir feels painfully honest. It’s about art and life and families and belief\, about who we are and what forms us\, the magic and the hurt\, and it evokes times that are well-lost while reminding us of the battles still being fought every day. Most of all\, I think\, it’s about love.” —Neil Gaiman\, author of The Sandman.

SUMMARY:Tattle Tales: 6 writers on discovering\, recording\, and shaping forgotten stories
DESCRIPTION:The ArQuives is proud to present Tattle Tales: 6 writers on discovering\, recording\, and shaping forgotten stories. Assembled by writer Elizabeth Ruth\, each member of this online panel will share valuable insight into how they’ve used archival & other research to resurrect\, amplify\, and represent invisible or lost stories. How are these writers working to challenge\, expand\, or reinvent into the future? How does their work intersect with social change\, if it does? Does legacy play a role in their creative process? Queer people’s lives and communities have often gone unrecorded within the mainstream and are too easily ignored or lost to dominant cultural memory & time. Join this eclectic group of writers as they explore these questions and more. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required. \n  \nBIOS \nElizabeth Ruth is the author of the novels Ten Good Seconds of Silence\, Smoke\, Matadora\, and Semi-Detached. SUMMARY:Joint Curatorial Tour: Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances; Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts with Dallas Fellini
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Dallas Fellini for a joint tour of Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts at the Jackman Humanities Institute and Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto Art Museum. These concurrent exhibitions consider the roles that absence and opacity play in rendering trans and queer lives and archives. \nThe program will begin with a tour of Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts on the 10th floor of The Jackman Humanities Institute (170 St. George Street). From there\, attendees will travel down St. George Street to the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (about a 10 minute walk) for a tour of Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances.  \nMnemonic silences\, disappearing acts considers the silences\, erasures\, and censorships that colour the queer and trans archive\, featuring works by Kasra Jalilipour\, Jordan King\, Kama La Mackerel\, Hazel Meyer and Cait McKinney\, and Lan “Florence” Yee. \nIndiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances brings together the work of Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley\, Lucas LaRochelle\, Joshua Schwebel\, Chelsea Thompto\, and Lan “Florence” Yee to consider opacity\, illegibility\, and invisibility as productive alternatives to contemporary trans hypervisibility. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Both exhibition spaces are wheelchair accessible. Please contact artmuseum@utoronto.ca if you have any accessibility needs or questions. \n— \nAbout the Curator \nDallas Fellini is a curator\, writer\, and artist living and working in Toronto. Their research is situated at the intersection of trans studies and archival studies. Dallas is a co-director of the arts publication Silverfish and has curated exhibitions and screenings for Gallery 44\, Vtape\, Trinity Square Video\, Xpace Cultural Centre\, Hearth\, Riverdale Hub Gallery\, the Jackman Humanities Institute\, and the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. SUMMARY:Zine Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a one-day free zine workshop on June 8. Participants will learn about the history of zines and their role in DIY and queer culture\, featuring examples from The ArQuives collections! \nParticipants will also learn how to create and reproduce their very own zines. The ArQuives will supply some materials\, but bringing your own is encouraged. We hope to see you there! \n18+ due to the nature of discussions and material. \nWe are a masked space\, masks can be provided should you not have one. \nRegistration required. \nFacilitated by Emma Awe & Clara Lynas \nEmma Awe is a PhD candidate in Public History at Carleton University\, located on the unceded traditional territories of the Algonquin. (website) \n\n\nClara Lynas: is a Scarborough based zine artist\, she studied printmaking at OCAD University and uses it as a medium to tell stories in book form. She believes the body of the book is an integral part of the story it tells and strives to make a living\, breathing zines with a great physical presence. She would like to live more out of love than out of spite.\n\nFor questions\, please email Volunteer@arquives.ca
