SUMMARY:Nuit Blanche 2024: Love Across Distance
DESCRIPTION:For Nuit Blanche 2024 an installation piece titled Love Across Distance will be presented at The ArQuives. \nLong distance relationships are a reality for many LGBTQ2+ individuals\, particularly in remote areas of Canada\, as online technology now allows many people to connect with others across geographic distances. \nThe installation offers a sense of experiencing love despite a geographic distance from a romantic partner. Social media\, dating apps and online dating have made it possible for people of all backgrounds\, genders and orientations to meet and connect\, despite geographic distance. But how are the sensorial experiences of love and intimacy experienced? Is it possible to truly feel sensations\, to develop trust and learn about one another if technology\, video and sound are the only methods of communication while apart? \nUsing a combination of sound and infrared technology\, this interactive installation allows audiences to ponder these questions\, while considering\, is it possible to experience true love across distance? The installation piece features two interactive stations with a representation of a partner or lover\, visible in one of the windows of our heritage house. Particularly for LGBTQ2+ people in remote parts of Canada\, meeting lovers or romantic partners may only be possible through technology\, sometimes across great distances. \nJordan King is a Canadian multi-disciplinary artist\, performer and writer. Her practice is rooted in performance\, archival research and intergenerational dialogue. Jordan’s work is generative\, intersectional\, and exploratory. \nNathan Bruce is a projection and lighting designer working in theatre and interactive installation. He is a Bachelors of Fine Arts Graduate of York University (2020) in Theatre Production & Design\, with an extensive and rapidly expanding resume. \nJordan and Nathan have co-designed the interactive installation for “Love Across Distance”. \nRead an interview with the artists \nVisit the official Nuit Blanche listing

SUMMARY:Viral Interventions
DESCRIPTION:On this eve of Day Without Art\, six new short films from Nepal\, Bulgaria\, Brazil\, Ecuador\, and Canada tell urgent and extraordinary stories about living with HIV today. The techniques are as diverse as their makers: from lush animation and staged floral portraits\, to radical sex performances and hybrid documentary mash-ups. Their voices are equally unforgettable\, brimming with laughter\, tears\, fury\, and joyful activism. Together\, they explore autobiographical stories from around the globe about this pandemic\, which still claims more than half a million lives every year. \nThese six short films were produced by Viral Interventions\, a York University research-creation project led by John Greyson and Sarah Flicker that\, since 2020\, has commissioned artists\, activists\, and scholars to collaborate on making new films about living with HIV today. See related Viral Interventions conference and exhibition November 29–30 at Vtape. \nWorld Premiere. Co-presented with Vtape\, Sensorium\, Archive/Counter Archive\, Digital Justice\, The ArQuives\, CATIE\, Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network\, AIDS Committee of Toronto\, and TIFF Community Impact. \nThe event takes place at TIFF Lightbox – Cinema 3 – Piers Handling Cinema. \nThe duration of this event is 100 minutes and includes a post-screening conversation with the filmmakers.

SUMMARY:Of Kin and Other Impossible Homes
DESCRIPTION:Building home is an act of defiance in a world that has not made space for it. For many trans and gender-diverse individuals Asians across the Asian diaspora\, kinship has been created in the absence of precedent\, forming beyond traditional structures of belonging. Of Kin and Other Impossible Homes traces these histories of care and connection through personal narratives\, photographs\, and archival materials. By weaving together past and present\, this exhibition honours the ways queer kinship reshapes what home can be\, even in the most unlikely places. \nCurated by Jae Kim and The ArQuives Curatorial Committee. \nPlease join us for an opening reception of Of Kin and Other Impossible Homes on May 29th from 6-8 pm. \nExhibitions runs May 29th – July 11th\, 2025. \nOpen to the public:Fridays 4:00 pm – 8:00 pmSaturdays 11:00 am – 3:00 pmSundays 11:00 am – 3:00 pm \nThe exhibit is closed on Saturday\, June 28th and Sunday\, June 29th.

To register select the “Get Tickets” link. \nPresented with support from the LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory\, The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives\, and Glad Day Bookshop\, this gathering has been shaped by those who were there\, and we’re honoured to help hold space for this remembering. \nStoryteller Bios \nDEB SINGH (Moderator)\nDeb is a Toronto-based community worker\, consultant and writer. This brief questionnaire is designed to help us prepare for each session. Please share these links with others in your community\, especially those from historically marginalized communities. \nWe especially want to hear from: \n\nLGBTQ2+ community members who already are or might be interested in our programming;\nresearchers\, academics\, and media who already or might use The ArQuives’ collections in their work; and\npartner organizations\, including libraries\, archives\, museums\, arts and heritage organizations\, cultural institutions\, and other LGBTQ2+ organizations.\n\nThe ArQuives values diversity and is committed to addressing historical inequities within our organization. We would love to hear from LGBTQ2+ communities that have been systematically marginalized\, including from rural communities and those who are Indigenous\, women\, trans\, nonbinary\, gender non-conforming\, Black\, people of colour\, newcomers\, and persons with disabilities. \nThanks for your assistance and collaboration! Your insights will be crucial in building a stronger\, more connected future for The ArQuives and the communities we serve. \nIf you have any questions or want to chat more about the project\, please reach out to Nico Mara-McKay at projectcoordinator@arquives.ca.
