SUMMARY:Tattle Tales: 6 writers on discovering\, recording\, and shaping forgotten stories
DESCRIPTION:The ArQuives is proud to present Tattle Tales: 6 writers on discovering\, recording\, and shaping forgotten stories. Assembled by writer Elizabeth Ruth\, each member of this online panel will share valuable insight into how they’ve used archival & other research to resurrect\, amplify\, and represent invisible or lost stories. How are these writers working to challenge\, expand\, or reinvent into the future? How does their work intersect with social change\, if it does? Does legacy play a role in their creative process? Queer people’s lives and communities have often gone unrecorded within the mainstream and are too easily ignored or lost to dominant cultural memory & time. Join this eclectic group of writers as they explore these questions and more. \nThe event is free\, but registration is required. \n  \nBIOS \nElizabeth Ruth is the author of the novels Ten Good Seconds of Silence\, Smoke\, Matadora\, and Semi-Detached. SUMMARY:LKDSB+
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a curiosity to trace queer and trans histories\, presents\, and futures at the Lambton-Kent District School Board\, LKDSB+ is a representation of an ongoing project that documents the work being done in schools at the LKDSB to animate queer and trans moments and conversations. Throughout the 2022/23 school year\, schools were encouraged to collect items that reflected and recorded these conversations and submit them to their “pride mini-museum\,” a banker’s box given to each school. In June\, the boxes were delivered to the Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Justice team\, who donated the material to The ArQuives Collection. The exhibit is a selection of work submitted by students. \nThe Chatham-Kent and Sarnia-Lambton region (southern Ontario) that LKDSB covers has little queer and trans history documented\, though much exists. Knowing where we come from can help us understand where we are and where we can go\, particularly for young people. LKDSB+\, and the stories it represents\, is a rural Ontario school board’s attempt to remember\, write\, and imagine queer and trans histories and futures. \nOpen times and dates: Fridays 4 pm – 8 pm\, Saturdays 11 am – 3 pm\, Sundays 11 am – 3 pm\, or by appointment – email curatorial@arquives.ca. Closed June 8\, June 9\, June 29 and June 30. \nInstallation facilitated by the Equity\, Diversity\, Inclusion and Justice Department of the Lambton-Kent District School Board\, with support from the Ontario Arts Council and the Government of Ontario. \n

SUMMARY:Joint Curatorial Tour: Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances; Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts with Dallas Fellini
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Dallas Fellini for a joint tour of Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts at the Jackman Humanities Institute and Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at the University of Toronto Art Museum. These concurrent exhibitions consider the roles that absence and opacity play in rendering trans and queer lives and archives. \nThe program will begin with a tour of Mnemonic silences\, disappearing acts on the 10th floor of The Jackman Humanities Institute (170 St. George Street). From there\, attendees will travel down St. George Street to the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery (about a 10 minute walk) for a tour of Indiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances.  \nMnemonic silences\, disappearing acts considers the silences\, erasures\, and censorships that colour the queer and trans archive\, featuring works by Kasra Jalilipour\, Jordan King\, Kama La Mackerel\, Hazel Meyer and Cait McKinney\, and Lan “Florence” Yee. \nIndiscernible thresholds\, escaped veillances brings together the work of Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley\, Lucas LaRochelle\, Joshua Schwebel\, Chelsea Thompto\, and Lan “Florence” Yee to consider opacity\, illegibility\, and invisibility as productive alternatives to contemporary trans hypervisibility. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Both exhibition spaces are wheelchair accessible. Please contact artmuseum@utoronto.ca if you have any accessibility needs or questions. \n— \nAbout the Curator \nDallas Fellini is a curator\, writer\, and artist living and working in Toronto. Their research is situated at the intersection of trans studies and archival studies. Dallas is a co-director of the arts publication Silverfish and has curated exhibitions and screenings for Gallery 44\, Vtape\, Trinity Square Video\, Xpace Cultural Centre\, Hearth\, Riverdale Hub Gallery\, the Jackman Humanities Institute\, and the Art Museum at the University of Toronto. Dallas is the recipient of the 2024 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators. \n— \nCo-presented with The Art Museum at the University of Toronto and the Jackman Humanities Institute. \n— \nTitle Image: Hazel Meyer and Cait McKinney\, The Pink Pegboard from Tape Condition: degraded (2016)\, 2023. She has a BA in Art History and Gender Studies from Carleton University and an MA in Contemporary Art\, Design\, and New Media Art Histories from OCAD University. During her time at OCAD\, her research focused on the queerness of contemporary burlesque and the concept of the feminist gaze. Since then\, her research has evolved to include high femme aesthetics\, femmes and kink\, and the pairing of contemporary art with archival material to bridge the gaps within archives. \nPatrizia Gentile is Professor in the Human Rights & Social Justice and the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation at Carleton University. Her monograph Queen of the Maple Leaf: Beauty Contests and Settle Femininity (UBC Press\, 2020) was nominated for the best book prize by the Canadian Historical Association in 2022. She is co-author with Gary Kinsman of the Canadian War on Queers: National Security as Sexual Regulation (UBC Press\, 2010) and has co-edited two anthologies on sexuality\, gender\, and embodiment. She is a cis-gendered/queer settler living on unceded Algonquin territories. \nMel Leverich (they/them) is the Archivist & Collections Librarian for the Leather Archives & Museum\, an international repository of kink\, leather\, and fetish community history that was founded in Chicago in 1991. Mel studied Classics and Cultural Studies at the Univeristy of Utah and has a Masters of Archival Studies from the University of British Columbia. \nIsabelle Cabrera Aragon (she/they) is a volunteer at The ArQuives in the curatorial committee. She has a BFA from the Art History and Studio Art program at Concordia University. Her focus has been in community projects and the role of institutions in supporting cultural heritage. \n\nImage credit: Rachel Britton

SUMMARY:Nuit Blanche 2024: Love Across Distance
DESCRIPTION:For Nuit Blanche 2024 an installation piece titled Love Across Distance will be presented at The ArQuives. \nLong distance relationships are a reality for many LGBTQ2+ individuals\, particularly in remote areas of Canada\, as online technology now allows many people to connect with others across geographic distances. \nThe installation offers a sense of experiencing love despite a geographic distance from a romantic partner. Social media\, dating apps and online dating have made it possible for people of all backgrounds\, genders and orientations to meet and connect\, despite geographic distance. But how are the sensorial experiences of love and intimacy experienced? Is it possible to truly feel sensations\, to develop trust and learn about one another if technology\, video and sound are the only methods of communication while apart? \nUsing a combination of sound and infrared technology\, this interactive installation allows audiences to ponder these questions\, while considering\, is it possible to experience true love across distance? The installation piece features two interactive stations with a representation of a partner or lover\, visible in one of the windows of our heritage house. Particularly for LGBTQ2+ people in remote parts of Canada\, meeting lovers or romantic partners may only be possible through technology\, sometimes across great distances. \nJordan King is a Canadian multi-disciplinary artist\, performer and writer. Her practice is rooted in performance\, archival research and intergenerational dialogue. Jordan’s work is generative\, intersectional\, and exploratory. \nNathan Bruce is a projection and lighting designer working in theatre and interactive installation. He is a Bachelors of Fine Arts Graduate of York University (2020) in Theatre Production & Design\, with an extensive and rapidly expanding resume. \nJordan and Nathan have co-designed the interactive installation for “Love Across Distance”. \nRead an interview with the artists \nVisit the official Nuit Blanche listing
