SUMMARY:A Roundtable on Trans Histories + Activism in Toronto
DESCRIPTION:Myseum of Toronto and The ArQuives invite you to join us for a roundtable discussion about trans activism in Toronto between the 1960s and 1990s. Speakers Monica Forrester\, Mirha-Soleil Ross\, and Rupert Raj will reflect on some of their foundational actions that helped create sustainability\, kinship\, and activist culture for the rights of trans people. This intergenerational roundtable will explore the implications and impact of communities whose members self-determined their own definitions of sustainability and health\, as their own advocates in the face of violence\, oppression\, and adversity. The panel will be moderated by Sly Sarkisova. \nMonica Forrester is a Two-Spirit trans woman\, a community activist\, a sex worker\, and an important piece of Toronto’s LGBTQ2+ history. Monica has an ongoing and intensive life of advocacy work in Toronto. She is the Executive Director and founder of Trans Pride Toronto. She formerly worked at the 519\, where she contributed to Trans Programming and was the outreach worker for the Trans Sex Worker Outreach Programme. She is currently the program coordinator of the Aboriginal Sex Workers Education and Outreach Project at Maggie’s: The Toronto Sex Workers Action Project. \nRupert Raj is transgender activist\, trans social author\, and former psychotherapist. Raj is a transgender pioneer who dedicated his career to clinical research\, counselling and advocacy for the transgender community. Raj established (and co-established) some of Canada’s earliest trans advocacy organizations\, including the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Transsexuals (disbanded). Raj also established the first national transsexual newsletter in Canada\, Gender Review: A FACTual Journal. \nMirha-Soleil Ross is a transexual videographer\, performance artist\, sex worker\, and activist. Since the early 1990s\, her work has focused on transsexual rights\, access to resources\, advocacy for sex workers\, and animal rights in Montreal and Toronto. \nSly Sarkisova is a Psychotherapist\, Consultant\, and Clinical Supervisor specializing in trauma informed therapy\, mental health and addiction recovery. \nThis roundtable discussion is a associated with the ActiVisions exhibition within Mysuem’s Intersections Festival\, a free city-wide festival running April 15th to 30th. \nMore about ActiVisions\nIn this one-of-a-kind exhibition\, The ArQuives opens their doors for the public to experience their extensive Trans Collections. Curated by Tobaron Waxman\, this exhibition explores the history of trans activism and resilience in our city. Curator Tobaron Waxman offers a unique lens on Toronto’s trans community\, focusing on the history of community\, resistance and care under extreme circumstances.

DESCRIPTION:The ArQuives is hosting the reopening of the solo exhibition of artist and photographer Hamidah Hemani.  The show titled pack un pack will feature a series of large and small format photography\, which provocatively explores the definitions and constructs of “home\, space and subculture” through a queer south Asian lens. pack un pack runs from March 18 to 29th\, at 34 Isabella Street. \nAccording to Hemani\, “Most queer people lose homes when they come out. Either that is being physically kicked out from their houses or at an inner level where a significant amount of comfort zone is compromised.”  \n“Then we set out to build our homes and communities that reflect who we are. This exhibition will be about finding homes that the brown South Asian have built in the contemporary spaces. It will be an exploration of South Asian communities and subcultures.” \nGallery Hours: \nSaturday\, March 18 from 2-6\nSunday\, March 19 from 2-5 \nMonday\, March 20 from 10-4\nWednesday\, March 22 from 10-4 \nSaturday\, March 25 from 2-6\nSunday\, March 26 from 2-5 \nMonday\, March 27 from 10-4\nWednesday\, March 29 from 10-4 \n

SUMMARY:Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives // Newly Restored 30th Anniversary Screening
DESCRIPTION:*Patrons attending this screening are requested to wear a mask at all times unless eating or drinking.* \nThis feature documentary delves into the rich history of Canadian queer women’s experiences in the mid–20th century. Compelling\, often hilarious and always rebellious\, the women interviewed in this film recount stories about their search for the places where openly gay women gathered in urban centres. Contemporary interviews\, archival footage and a stylized fictional narrative based on the pulp novels of the 1950s are woven throughout this simultaneously funny\, heartbreaking and empowering film. Forbidden Love brings an important and empowering history of lesbian sexuality in Canada out of the closet. \nPost-screening Q&A with director and Hot Docs alum Lynne Fernie\, moderated by filmmaker Janis Cole. \nPromotional Partners: The ArQuives\, Inside Out and Media Commons Archive at the University of Toronto \nTickets: $15

SUMMARY:Sex Salon: Talking Sex: Engaging with the Pussy Palace Oral Histories
DESCRIPTION:ASL interpretation provided \nOn September 15\, 2000\, five Toronto police officers raided the Pussy Palace\, an exclusive bathhouse event for queer women and trans folk\, laying several charges against the organizers\, accusing them of violating liquor laws. There has never been an oral history project about this event\, the last police raid of a queer bathhouse in Canadian history. The LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory\, in collaboration with The ArQuives\, has collected 36 interviews with bathhouse patrons\, event organizers\, and community activists. Our interviews address not only the raid\, but also radical sex/gender cultures in turn of the 21st century Toronto. Our 6-member team has been working to animate and activate these interviews through research creation in the form of audio portraits\, video shorts\, and other methods. \nThis FREE presentation (taking place on Zoom) will feature both community narrators and members of the project team. We envision this event as a curated ‘viewing and listening party’ designed to engage both the narrators themselves and others interested in queer and trans public history. The presentation will have these parts: a brief overview of the project; a showcase of several of our digital research creation experiments; a discussion of our creative processes; reflections from our featured narrators; and an open conversation with attendees about creative ways that researchers are collaborating with artists\, project narrators\, and others around engaging broader publics in queer and trans history. \nZoom registration: https://tinyurl.com/SexSalonApril22 \nFacebook Event: https://fb.me/e/4BjmGw7k2 \nPussy Palace Oral History Project Team Members \nAlisha Stranges (she/her) is a queer\, community-based\, public humanities scholar\, theatre creator\, and performer. Their primary mediums include film\, photography\, and illustration. She later was called as a witness to testify in defense of the two volunteer-organizers charged with allegedly violating the liquor license act. \nRobin Woodward (she/her) is a longtime maker and small business owner based in Toronto. Her favourite projects combine elements of hands-on crafting\, graphic design and wordplay. SUMMARY:Three Old Queers - A Queers in Your Ears Event
DESCRIPTION:When the Toronto-based storytelling collective Queers in Your Ears (QIYE) was founded in 1997\, telling personal stories about the varied experiences of being LGBTQ2S wasn’t anywhere near as common as it is today. In the 25 years since this innovative group of storytellers first came together\, there have been sweeping changes to the landscape of what it means to be queer but QIYE knows how important it is to preserve our experiences – good and bad – and to keep telling our stories.\n\nTo mark our 25th anniversary\, QIYE is collaborating with the ArQuives to create a virtual exhibition of memorabilia associated with our performance history that will be launched in October 2021 but we hope you’ll join us on Wednesday\, June 23rd from 7:30-9:30 pm for the first of a series of concerts that QIYE will be presenting this year.\n\n\n\n“Three Old Queers” will showcase the stories of Rico Rodriguez\, founder of QIYE\, long-time member Jeffrey Canton\, and educator and activist Tim McCaskell.\n\n\n\nThe event is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:El Satario: Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives and the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto are excited to co-sponsor a screening and discussion of El satario on Thursday\, May 6 at 4PM Eastern Time on Zoom. Please note that registration is required\, and space is limited. We anticipate a large audience. This event will be recorded. \nEl satario is widely considered the oldest extant pornographic film. It is rumored to have been produced in Argentina between 1907 and 1912 – though its exact date and place of production are unknown. For the first time\, three different prints of El satariohave surfaced in a single location: Toronto\, Canada. Until now\, none of these prints have been available for scholarship. Last year\, The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives discovered a previously unknown print in its collection. Meanwhile\, two prints\, previously known to collectors\, have been donated to the Mark S. Bonham Centre’s Sexual Representation Collection at the University of Toronto. Sponsored by The ArQuives and the Cinema Studies Institute at the University of Toronto\, this event will screen The ArQuives’ print of El satario and bring together three scholars of early Latin American cinema and visual culture to examine the film’s social\, cultural\, and technical context\, and the mysterious circumstances of its production\, circulation\, and reception. \nDiscussants: \nCarolina Cappa is an audiovisual archivist and media professor. She has just published “Nitrato argentino\, una historia del cine de los primeros tiempos” (Argentine nitrate\, an early cinema history)\, a book and an open access website for the preservation and research about early Argentinian film. She worked as a film preservation specialist at the Museo del Cine “Pablo Ducrós Hicken” (Argentina) for over a decade and was head of the film archive at Cinemateca Boliviana (Bolivia). She has worked on several film restoration projects\, including “El Bolillo Fatal“\, a previously lost 1927 Bolivian film. As a professor\, she has taught courses on audiovisual creation and technology within the programs of Image and Sound Design and Graphic Design at the University of Buenos Aires. She collaborates as researcher at the media archaeology project IDIS and teaches the workshop “Pequeños archivos audiovisuales” (Small Audiovisual Archives) towards the creation of decentralized and community audiovisual archives. Currently\, she is a professor and Master’s thesis supervisor at the Film Preservation program of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola (Donostia\, Spain). \nAndrea Cuarterolo\, PhD\, is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires and a researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET)\, where she specializes in the study of Argentine and Latin American precinema and early cinema. She is the author of De la foto al fotograma: Relaciones entre cine y fotografía en la argentina 1840–1933 and the co-editor of the volumes Pantallas transnacionales. El cine argentino y mexicano del período clásico and Diez miradas sobre el cine y audiovisual. Since 2015\, she directs with Georgina Torello the journal Vivomatografías. Revista de estudios sobre precine y cine silente en Latinomérica\, an annual\, peer-reviewed and open-access publication focused on precinema and silent cinema in Latin America.  She currently co-directs the Centro de Investigación y Nuevos Estudios sobre cine (Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires) and the Asociación de Estudios sobre Precine y Cine Silente Latinoamericano (PRECILA). \nLeonardo Gomes is a recent graduate of Ryerson University’s Master’s program in Film and Photography Preservation. His thesis\, entitled “Afternoon of El satario: Expanding on the Finding of an Unidentified Print\,” examined his path to uncover the social\, cultural\, and technical context behind the film’s production\, circulation\, and reception. While volunteering at The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives\, he discovered the previously unknown print of El satario that inspired this event. He is currently a research assistant with the Archive/Counter-Archive project\, where he is part of the CFMDC case study. His main research interests are Latin American cinema\, stag films\, and early erotic and pornographic gay cinema. He also has a passion for precinema\, early\, and silent film\, and hopes to make a career as a film archivist and researcher.
