SUMMARY:We Were Never Lost
DESCRIPTION:Developed as part of the 2025-2026 Master of Museum Studies Capstone Projects course at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information\, We Were Never Lost highlights the use of creative practices by queer Black women and women of color as tools for survival and community building in Canada. This exhibition showcases the contributions and legacies of Sister Vision Press\, Fireweed Collective\, and Multicultural Women in Concert/CAMP SIS\, tracking how these movements built on each other and created platforms for those who had been silenced due to racism\, sexism and homophobia. \nFrom the mid 1980s to the early 2000s\, each of these groups created space for the radical self-expressions of queer and racialized women\, including dance\, visual arts\, dub poetry\, oral histories\, incisive political essays\, and more. These artists spoke out on critical issues facing their communities\, like labour\, migration\, and racism. \nThis exhibition will showcase selected publications\, photographs\, ephemera\, and quotes from participants in these movements\, as well as examples of how this deeply political work continues today. \nPlease join us for an opening reception on April 9th from 6-8pm \nOpen times and dates:\nFridays 4pm – 8pm\, Saturdays 11am – 3pm\, Sundays 11am – 3pm.\nOr by appointment – email curatorial@arquives.ca \nThank you to Dr. Afua Cooper\, Anjula Gogia\, Courtnay McFarlane\, Faith Nolan\, Felicity Tayler\, Gabrielle Mandel\, Dr. Meghan Tibbits-Lamirande\, Whitney French\, Dr. Ronald Cummings\, and Dr. Syrus Marcus Ware for your incredible generosity with your time\, knowledge\, and memories. \nThe team wishes to thank Dr. Maggie Hutcheson\, our project mentor\, and Raegan Swanson\, as well as Daniel Payne\, Hannah Dickson\, Jade Nelson\, Patrick Taylor\, Stefanie Martin\, and Syriah Bailey. \nCurated by Abla Touglo Midodji\, Emily Coneybeare\, Cameron Findlay\, and Zhikall Kakei\, as part of the Master of Museum Studies program at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information\, in collaboration with The ArQuives Curatorial Committee.

SUMMARY:Queer Britain: Culture\, Community\, and Creativity
DESCRIPTION:Join Emily Garside\, queer author and tutor at London’s Bishopsgate Institute\, for a journey through the vibrant cultural history of LGBTQ+ life in the UK. From underground clubs and drag performances to queer theatre\, literature\, and community events\, British queer culture has long been a space of creativity\, joy\, and resistance. \nThis talk examines how queer communities have carved out spaces to express their identity\, celebrate difference\, and build networks of support  from the 1960s to the present day. Alongside these cultural narratives\, Emily will reflect on the connections and parallels with Canada\, highlighting how ideas\, styles\, and cultural practices have crossed borders. \nThe event concludes with an open discussion\, inviting participants to share reflections\, consider what these histories reveal about queer life today\, and explore the ongoing legacy of UK queer culture. \n\nRegistration required using the “Get Tickets” link. \nPlease note that The ArQuives is a masked space. If you don’t have a mask\, we will provide one to you.

SUMMARY:The Pussy Palace: An Instagram Story
DESCRIPTION:On view November 7–21\, 2025\nPublic Hours: Fridays 4–8PM | Saturdays & Sundays 11AM–3PM \nThis interactive exhibit reimagines a night at the Pussy Palace — a series of queer women and trans bathhouse events organized by the Toronto Women’s Bathhouse Committee between 1998 and 2014. On September 15\, 2000\, police raided the Palace\, disrupting over 350 guests in what became the last major queer bathhouse raid in Canadian history. \nThrough digital paintings\, narrative storytelling\, and interview clips accessed via QR codes\, visitors move through the space as patrons once did\, encountering a flashpoint in Toronto’s queer history. \nFrom arrival and flirtation to the sudden raid that brought the night to a halt\, the exhibition draws from 36 oral history interviews recorded by the LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory. \nTip for visitors: Bring an internet-enabled mobile device and headphones for a more intimate listening experience. \nConceptualized and produced by Alisha Stranges for the LGBTQ+ Oral History Digital Collaboratory (Elspeth Brown\, Director)\, the installation was first commissioned in 2023 by the Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Office at the University of Toronto Scarborough\, with support from the Positive Space Committee. Digital assets were created collectively by the research team\, and the exhibit is presented in partnership with The ArQuives.
