SUMMARY:Keeping Our Stories Alive: Processing LGBTQ2S Histories with Jeffrey Canton
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Storytelling Toronto\, The ArQuives is thrilled to present Keeping Our Stories Alive: Processing LGBTQ2S Histories with Jeffrey Canton. \nPreserving personal stories of unique experiences of being LGBTQ2S is one of the most important ways to contribute to the history of the Queer and Trans community in Canada. This course offers participants techniques to take a memory or anecdote about their experience as LGBTQ2S and craft it into a polished performance piece. Participants will learn how to shape and enhance their story and give it the power it deserves as a contribution to our history as LGBTQ2S. Participants will be encouraged to donate their stories to The ArQuives as well as participate in a final concert where participants will share with their guests. \nThis course is being presented in person at The ArQuives during the following dates and times. \nFriday\, August 18 (6 pm- 10 pm)\nSaturday\, August 19 (10 am-4 pm)\nSunday\, August 20 (12 pm- 5 pm)\n \nJeffrey Canton\, a storyteller of traditional and personal tales for over three decades\, identifies as LGBTQ\, and much of his work focuses on his intersectional identity. He is a core member of Queers in Your Ears\, Toronto’s oldest LGBTQ2S storytelling collective. Jeffrey has trained at the Toronto Biennial of Art in conflict resolution\, anti-oppression\, and anti-racism and uses this training to create a safe space for all participants. \nThe last day to register for this class is Monday\, August 14th at 5 pm.

DESCRIPTION:Visit The ArQuives on Saturday\, September 30\, at 3 PM for an in-person Curator Talk with Jordan King. Jordan will share about the performers featured in the video and photographs on display\, as well as the research process for the exhibition “Onstage / Offstage\,” which runs in our second-floor gallery space until October 14\, 2023. Dallas Fellini will moderate this event. \nJordan King is a multi-disciplinary artist\, curator and writer. Her practice is rooted in performance\, archival research and intergenerational dialogue. She is currently a Curatorial Practice MFA student at OCAD University in Toronto\, Canada (Graduating 2024)\, with a focus on documentary film and multimedia documentation of underground queer performance. Jordan spent her formative years immersed in nightlife culture\, which continues to influence her work and research. Her most recent projects have focused on LGBTQ2S+ stage performers in the mid/late 20th Century\, an oral history interview podcast series\, short video works and the creation of an autobiographical solo performance work. \nDallas Fellini is a curator\, writer\, and artist living and working in Toronto. They are a co-founder of Silverfish\, an arts publication devoted to interdisciplinary collaboration\, skill-sharing\, non-institutional pedagogy\, and cultivating sustained dialogue between contemporary artists and writers. Dallas is pursuing a Master of Visual Studies in Curatorial Studies at the University of Toronto. Their curatorial research is situated at the intersection of trans studies and archival studies.

Hadi Moussally is a Lebanese-French filmmaker whose films have won 50 awards and screened in over 350 international festivals. \nHOMECOMING QUEENZ (Elias Wakeem\, 2023\, 11:00 min.)\nPerformance artists in drag confront bigoted border guards at Ben Gurion airport. Elias Wakeem is a performance artist exploring themes of identity and resilience through visual storytelling. \nLAYLA (Noor Gatih\, 2021\, 4:00 min.)\nA young woman stares out a window as she daydreams about a part of herself that she’s unable to openly express. Noor Gatih is a queer filmmaker who explores family and identity in her work. \nTEMPEST IN A TEAPOT (Amy Gottlieb\, 1987\, 7:00 min.)\nTribute to her radical mother’s activism and solidarity. Amy Gottlieb (1954-2023) was a Toronto queer artist\, activist and educator whose lifetime of solidarity with Palestine inspired this screening. \nNAZARETH (Mike Hoolboom\, 2023\, 7:00 min.)\nA return to the fateful year of 1948 in Israel\, reframed by a single photograph that is taken up one face at a time. MIke Hoolboom is a Toronto artist who writes and makes movies. \nMY WHOLE HEART IS WITH YOU (Essa Grayeb\, 2022\, 9:00 min.)\nAn experimental video that transforms moments of tension and anticipation from Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s 1967 resignation speech into an emotional journey. Essa Grayeb is a Palestinian visual artist based in Jerusalem whose practice traverses a range of media\, primarily photography\, moving images and installation. \nEVEN A DOG IN BABYLON (Lior Shamriz\, 2023\, 11:00 min.)\nIn collaboration with actor Myriam Ali-Ahmad\, a radical staging of doubts and debates in a foggy field. Lior Shamriz is a filmmaker and artist based in Santa Cruz\, California. \nTHE POEM WE SANG (Annie Sakkab\, 2023\, 13:00 min.\, work-in-progress / sneak preview)\nA creative catharsis of post-memory mediated through layers of love\, loss\, longing\, and forced migration. Participants will learn about the history of zines and their role in DIY and queer culture\, featuring examples from The ArQuives collections! \nParticipants will also learn how to create and reproduce their very own zines with collage and craft materials provided – we hope to see you there! \n\nEmma Awe is a PhD candidate in Public History at Carleton University\, located on the unceded traditional territories of the Algonquin. Using artistic methods\, their dissertation asks how queer punk zines configure into the historic emergence of queer radical politics across Canada from 1980-2000. In educational\, not-for-profit\, and community settings\, Emma has worked with youth to explore queer and trans pasts through arts-based experiential learning. They draw inspiration from historic queer and radical media to dream new worlds in their own creative practices. (website)\n\nClara Lynas: is a Scarborough based zine artist\, she studied printmaking at OCAD University and uses it as a medium to tell stories in book form. She believes the body of the book is an integral part of the story it tells and strives to make a living\, breathing zines with a great physical presence. Increasingly\, 2SLGBTQ+ materials are disproportionately censored or challenged. How can libraries\, authors\, educators\, and communities work together to defend against the attacks to erase queer lives? \nChildren’s book author\, Dylan Glynn\, TPL’s Director of Collections and Membership Services\, Lisa Radha Vohra\, Executive Director of The ArQuives\, Raegan Swanson\, and TDSB’s Shauna Thomas\, join James Turk\, Director of the Centre for Free Expression\, to explore the intersections of intellectual freedom and 2SLGBTQ+ written works from academic\, historical\, cultural\, public library\, school and artist perspectives. \nHow does our society ensure queer stories continue to thrive and how do we protect the voices of marginalized people?
