SUMMARY:Community Ties Online Session (Fri.\, 13 June)

With support from Women and Gender Equality Canada\, we launched Community Ties: Our Future Together\, an initiative to strengthen our organization and expand our impact across Canada. \nIn February and March\, we conducted in-person community conversations in 12 cities across Canada\, and now we’re hoping to reach more folks from around the country through our online national survey and community conversations\, and one-on-one interviews that will be scheduled individually with participants. \n\nRegister for an online community conversation:\n\nThursday\, June 12 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM EST (in English)\nFriday\, June 13 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EST (in English)\nSunday\, June 15 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM EST (in English)\nSaturday\, June 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 PM EST (in French)\n\n\nRegister for a one-on-one interview (to be scheduled individually)\n\nPlease note that spaces and honoraria for our online community conversations and one-on-one interviews are limited. This brief questionnaire is designed to help us prepare for each session. Please share these links with others in your community\, especially those from historically marginalized communities. \nWe especially want to hear from: \n\nLGBTQ2+ community members who already are or might be interested in our programming;\nresearchers\, academics\, and media who already or might use The ArQuives’ collections in their work; and\npartner organizations\, including libraries\, archives\, museums\, arts and heritage organizations\, cultural institutions\, and other LGBTQ2+ organizations.\n\nThe ArQuives values diversity and is committed to addressing historical inequities within our organization. We would love to hear from LGBTQ2+ communities that have been systematically marginalized\, including from rural communities and those who are Indigenous\, women\, trans\, nonbinary\, gender non-conforming\, Black\, people of colour\, newcomers\, and persons with disabilities. \nThanks for your assistance and collaboration! Your insights will be crucial in building a stronger\, more connected future for The ArQuives and the communities we serve. \nIf you have any questions or want to chat more about the project\, please reach out to Nico Mara-McKay at projectcoordinator@arquives.ca.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors' Stories of Conversion Therapy
DESCRIPTION:Join The ArQuives for the Canadian book launch of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy. Please use the Get Tickets link to register. \nRefreshments will be available after the event. \nThe ArQuives is a masked space.

SUMMARY:Nuit Blanche 2025: Disappearing Acts
DESCRIPTION:The ArQuives is proud to sponsor “Disappearing Acts\,” a video and dance party by artist Nina Jeffares-Levitt during Nuit Blanche\, October 4-5\, 2025 in Sankofa (formerly Dundas) Square in downtown Toronto. \nLevitt’s video commemorates bygone bars and nightclubs that were once the heart and soul of Toronto’s gay and lesbian communities during decades of essential nightlife. Some were short-lived\, others decades strong—all were safe havens where we met lovers\, where friendships were forged\, and where LGBTQ2+ spirits soared. \nFrom the longstanding St. Charles Tavern\, Boots\, Chez Moi and The Rose to lesser-known haunts\, these establishments helped to shape queer identity and health. Factors like the AIDS crisis\, urban gentrification\, Covid-19\, and social media have all contributed to their disappearance. Memories of these spaces are fading\, especially as generations age and landmarks are lost to redevelopment \nDance to the music of DJs from 7PM to 11PM. Experience the joy of dancing while discovering this history. Connect with the past and honour the social history of our communities. And see the video before it\, too\, disappears. \nAcknowledgements:\nAn Independent Project for Nuit Blanche 2025.\nSupported by The City of Toronto\, The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archive\, Sankofa Square\, Toronto Arts Council\, York University Faculty Association\, and the School of the Arts\, Media\, Performance & Design at York University

SUMMARY:The Pussy Palace: An Instagram Story
DESCRIPTION:On view November 7–21\, 2025\nPublic Hours: Fridays 4–8PM | Saturdays & Sundays 11AM–3PM \nThis interactive exhibit reimagines a night at the Pussy Palace — a series of queer women and trans bathhouse events organized by the Toronto Women’s Bathhouse Committee between 1998 and 2014. On September 15\, 2000\, police raided the Palace\, disrupting over 350 guests in what became the last major queer bathhouse raid in Canadian history. \nThrough digital paintings\, narrative storytelling\, and interview clips accessed via QR codes\, visitors move through the space as patrons once did\, encountering a flashpoint in Toronto’s queer history. \nFrom arrival and flirtation to the sudden raid that brought the night to a halt\, the exhibition draws from 36 oral history interviews recorded by the LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory. \nTip for visitors: Bring an internet-enabled mobile device and headphones for a more intimate listening experience. \nConceptualized and produced by Alisha Stranges for the LGBTQ+ Oral History Digital Collaboratory (Elspeth Brown\, Director)\, the installation was first commissioned in 2023 by the Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Office at the University of Toronto Scarborough\, with support from the Positive Space Committee. Digital assets were created collectively by the research team\, and the exhibit is presented in partnership with The ArQuives.
