SUMMARY:Queer Stitch 'n' Beach
DESCRIPTION:Join a 2 hour gathering of 5–9 participants for queer craft\, conversation\, and reflection at Hanlan’s Point Beach—a significant 2SLGBTQIA+ site. \nAs part of McKenna Gray’s curatorial programming for The Wild and the Weeds\, artist Morris Fox will lead a “Stitch ‘n’ Beach.” Inspired by “stitch ’n’ bitch” circles\, this creative session explores themes of queer memory\, ecological grief\, sexuality\, and queer presence in public green spaces. We’ll beach\, chat\, and craft together—contributing to a collaborative project and a short reflective research questionnaire. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their own craft work\, the artist will also have crayons\, blank patches\, paper\, to make frottage. Material from the event will be scanned and included in two of the artist’s research outputs include a collage book and mixtape. \nThis session is part of a PhD project on queer ecologies\, gothic sensibility\, and collective worldmaking at Concordia University. \nWe are hoping that participants are curious about how this event could be beneficial to their feelings about queerness\, nature\, the socio-political climate we are in\, and contributing to a queer toolkit. We seek participants who self-identify within the 2SLGBTQIA+ spectra and are 18+ years of age. \nWe look forward to your presence on the beach. \nRegister here or via the “Get Tickets” link. \nQuestions can be directed to morris.fox@concordia.ca. Once slots are filled\, those interested can email outreach@arquives.ca to join the waitlist. \nPlease note: After registration\, participants will be sent a research consent form and will need to read through and sign the form prior to the event. We will have paper copies on hand\, should you prefer. \nWhile there is no financial compensation\, some materials will be provided. You’re welcome to bring your own supplies\, plus water and weather-appropriate gear. \nIf\, on the day of the event\, the weather rains/storms us out\, assume that the event is postponed. We will notify you of the new proposed date. \nParticipants will be expected to purchase their own ferry tickets and meet the artist at the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at 11:15am for the ferry to Hanlan’s Point. Should this be a financial barrier\, you may contact outreach@arquives.ca to request a compensated ticket.
