Danielle Ribeiro from Great.com interviewed The ArQuives as part of their ‘Great.com Talks With…‘ podcast. This series is an antidote to negative news stories that aims to shed light on organizations and experts whose work is making a positive impact on the world.

The ArQuives, formerly known as the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives, stands as a vital institution dedicated to preserving LGBTQ2+ history in Canada. Founded in 1973 by a group of activists, historians, and archivists, we evolved into the largest independent LGBTQ2+ archives in the world. With a vast collection of materials ranging from personal letters to organizational records, The ArQuives serves as a crucial resource for researchers, activists, and community members alike.

Today Raegan Swanson, Executive Director of The ArQuives, talked with Great.com about how our materials are a testament to the struggles, triumphs, and lived realities of LGBTQ+ individuals throughout history.

At the heart of The ArQuives’ mission lies a commitment to preserving and sharing the diverse narratives of LGBTQ2+ individuals and communities. Through its extensive collection of documents, photographs, oral histories, and other materials, The ArQuives ensures that the experiences and struggles of LGBTQ2+ people throughout Canadian history are not forgotten. These stories provide insight into the past and serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for present and future generations.

Founded on the principles of inclusivity and recognition, The ArQuives is a sanctuary where the narratives of the LGBTQ+ community are preserved. We meticulously curate a diverse range of materials, some of which breathe life into stories more than a hundred years old. Personal correspondences, vibrant community publications, and photographs that capture moments from the quotidian to the profound all find a home here. This collection isn’t merely an accumulation of items; it’s a living chronicle that celebrates the multitudinous dimensions of LGBTQ+ identities and histories.

In addition to archival work, The ArQuives actively engages with the LGBTQ2+ community through various outreach programs and initiatives. From exhibitions and public events to educational workshops and online resources, the organization seeks to foster greater awareness and understanding of LGBTQ2+ history and issues. By creating spaces for dialogue and reflection, The ArQuives helps to strengthen connections within the community and promote inclusivity and acceptance.

In our mission to bridge the past with the present for a more informed future, The ArQuives ensures that these histories are accessible to everyone. It extends beyond the LGBTQ+ community to educate the wider public and support researchers on an interdisciplinary quest. By making these resources available, The ArQuives helps dispel myths, enrich cultural discourses, and provide a nuanced understanding of the community’s evolution over time.

As The ArQuives continues to expand its collection and reach, its dedication to preserving LGBTQ2+ history remains unwavering. By documenting the past and present experiences of LGBTQ2+ individuals and communities, we ensure that their voices are heard, and their stories are remembered. In doing so, The ArQuives not only honors the legacy of those who have come before but also lays the foundation for a more inclusive and equitable future.

Great.com is an organization aimed at solving the world’s most dire problem — global climate change. Starting in New Jersey, their mission is to take money from an otherwise harmful and greedy industry (online casinos) and move it towards a positive and good cause (solving the climate crisis). In addition to directly donating 100% of the revenue they earn in the casino industry, they also launch and manage fundraising campaigns to persuade casino entrepreneurs to donate. So far, they’ve generated over $2 million to climate research through their own donations and proceeds from their fundraising initiatives.
