We are HiringThe Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (The ArQuives) is the largest independent LGBTQ2+ archives in the world. Primarily a volunteer-run organization with a focus on Canadian content, The ArQuives acquires, preserves, and provides public access to information and archival materials in a variety of audiovisual and textual formats. Our organization offers a range of research, exhibition, educational, and community programming. With the support of the Community One Foundation and the Foundation Rainbow Grant, we are pleased to announce a short-term, part-time opportunity for a Trans Collections Project Assistant. The Project Assistant will engage in trans history by preparing records for permanent storage at The ArQuives, by conducting outreach with members of the trans community, and by assisting in the collection of trans material for The ArQuives. We will provide training in the collection and organization of personal, organization, and artistic records to meet the Canadian archival standards. The selected candidate will receive training from a trained archivist and the Volunteer + Outreach Coordinator, and will be mentored throughout the program. The selected candidate will develop their research, writing, and outreach skills; work with database entry and learn about the conservation of archival records; and may help create an online exhibition. The program will run from July 2017 to January 2018 and the successful candidate will receive an honorarium for their work.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Organize and describe records from trans archival donors.
  2. Work with the archivist and volunteers to prepare material for online databases and exhibits.
  3. Consult with community members about future donations to the archives.

Qualification and Experience

  1. Knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ2+ history, communities, and their issues/interests with a focus on trans history.
  2. Background in archival work is not necessary as training will be provided—we seek a candidate with enthusiasm for community history and willingness to learn and collaborate.
  3. Ability to work independently, with a project team, and with volunteer committees.
  4. A strong commitment to the mission of The ArQuives.
