Join us to celebrate the launch of Out North: An Archive of Queer Activism and Kinship in Canada. Recently published by Figure 1 Publishing in Vancouver, BC, this book tells a story of LGBTQ2+ collective life and action in Canada since the mid-twentieth century and emphasizes political and cultural movements across regional lines. Out North features artwork, photographs, journals, publications, and ephemera held at The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives (the largest independent LGBTQ2+ archive in the world). Hear about the research and writing process from authors Craig Jennex and Nisha Eswaran in this event, moderated by contributors Amber Dean and Phanuel Antwi. 

Craig Jennex is an Assistant Professor of English at Ryerson University. He is co-editor of Popular Music and the Politics of Hope: Queer and Feminist Interventions (Routledge, 2019). His writing has appeared in TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies, Popular Music & Society, the Journal of Canadian Studies, GUTS: A Canadian Feminist Magazine, the Ashgate Research Companion to Popular Music and Politics, The Spaces and Places of Canadian Popular Culture, among others. 

Nisha Eswaran is a writer and academic based in Toronto, Ontario. Her work has appeared in Postcolonial Text, South Asian Review, Kajal, and Jamhoor. She is a PhD candidate in the Department of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where she researches friendship and anti-colonial history in South Asian literature. 

Amber Dean is an Associate Professor of Cultural Studies and Gender Studies at McMaster University. She is the author of Remembering Vancouver’s Disappeared Women: Settler Colonialism and the Difficulty of Inheritance (University of Toronto Press, 2015) and the co-editor of both Remembering Air India: The Art of Public Mourning (University of Alberta Press, 2017) and Feminist Praxis Revisited: Critical Reflections on University-Community Engagement (Wilfred Laurier University Press, 2019). 

Phanuel Antwi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language and Literatures at the University of British Columbia. His work has been published in Interventions, Affinities, and Studies in Canadian Literature, among others. He writes, researches, and teaches critical Black studies, Black Atlantic and diasporic studies, gender and sexuality studies, and Canadian literature and culture.
