The ArQuives (formally the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives) is the largest independent LGBTQ2+ archives in the world. Primarily a volunteer-run organization with a focus on Canadian content, The ArQuives acquires, preserves, and provides public access to information and collections in a variety of formats. Our organization offers a range of research, exhibition, educational, and community programming. With the support of the Michael Lynch Grant in LGBTTQ Histories from the University of Toronto, we are pleased to announce a 12 week/part-time opportunity for a 2-Spirit Collection Project Assistant.

The Project Assistant will engage in 2-Spirit material history by working with 2-Spirit records at The ArQuives and by conducting outreach with members of the 2-Spirit community. We will provide training in the collection and organization of personal, organization, and artistic records to meet the Canadian archival standards. The selected candidate will receive training from a trained archivist and will be mentored throughout the project.

The selected candidate will develop their research, writing, and outreach skills; work with database entry and learn about the conservation of archival records; and may help in the creation of an online exhibition. The program will run from January 2020 to March 2020 (12 weeks) and the successful candidate will receive an honorarium for their work.

The ArQuives acknowledges and is committed to addressing historical inequities within our organization. We encourage applications from marginalized communities including those who identify as Indigenous, women, trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, Black, people of colour, and persons with disabilities.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Organize and describe records from 2-Spirit archival donors already in our collection.
  2. Work with the archivist and volunteers to prepare material for online databases and exhibits.
  3. Consult with community members about the collection.

Qualification and Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of 2-Spirit history, 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and their issues/interests.
  • Enthusiasm for community history and willingness to learn and collaborate. A background in archival work is not necessary as training will be provided.
  • Ability to work independently, with a project team, and with volunteer committees.
  • A strong commitment to the mission of The ArQuives and a commitment to decolonization and anti-oppression.
