Workshop description:

In this virtual workshop designed for high school teachers across Canada, we will explore the value of primary sources in the classroom to activate lessons, activities, assignments and critical discussions about 2SLGBTQIA+ histories, communities, and cultures.

Highlighting the rich primary source materials held at The ArQuives (the world’s largest independent collection of  2SLGBTQIA+ documentary heritage, based in Toronto, ON) and their value for educators across the country, this workshop will introduce participants to The ArQuives’ Education Resources and archival collections, with guidance and frameworks for integrating them into your teaching practice.

If you love (queer) history, media literacy, inclusive curriculum, and are looking for ways to enhance your approach to classroom education, this workshop is for you! No preparation is required, and attendance is free. Participants do not need to be currently employed as a high school teacher to attend. We encourage attendance based on the region where you ordinarily reside, but no one will be turned away.

Access notes:

The workshop will be 90 minutes in length, featuring both presentation-style and discussion-based facilitation in English, with auto-generated subtitles. Participants are not required to turn their camera or audio on at any point. The live virtual workshops will not be recorded, but an asynchronous version will be made available after the live workshops have concluded. If you have any additional access needs, please note them in the registration form.

Facilitator bio:

Brody Weaver (she/they) is a community educator, writer and artist with experience developing and facilitating workshops on gender and sexuality diversity, queer and trans history, and systems change for P-12 classrooms, regional school boards, provincial government, non-profit organizations, and community settings. She has worked as the Education Coordinator at The Youth Project in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she managed a team of trans educators to deliver workshops on 2SLGBTQIA+ related topics in public schools across the province. She is currently in the Masters of Information Program at the University.
