The ArQuives (formerly the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives) is the largest independent LGBTQ2+ archives in the world. Primarily a volunteer-run organization with a focus on Canadian content, The ArQuives acquires, preserves, and provides public access to information and collections in any medium. Our organization offers a range of research, exhibition, educational, and community programming. We are pleased to announce a 12 month contract for a Museum Collection Specialist.

The Collections Specialist will work to improve collection management and public access to the collection, particularly through improving our descriptive standards in our collection management system. The selected applicant will also work with the Executive Director and The ArQuives staff and volunteers to photograph the collection and rehouse artifacts as necessary.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Review artifact collection descriptions and update entries to meet descriptive standards
  • Work with the archivists and volunteers to photograph artifacts
  • Rehouse artifacts
  • Create workflow for incoming artifacts

Qualifications & Experience

  • Training in museum studies (or equivalent experience), in museum registration or collections management
  • Knowledge of best practices for collection management, documentation, and preservation standards
  • 1 year of practical work experience
  • Experience working with Nomenclature 4
  • Intermediate experience with Photoshop
  • Knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ2+ communities
  • Ability to work independently, with a project team, and with volunteer committees
  • A strong commitment to the mission of The ArQuives
  • Commitment to decolonization and anti-oppression
