Gens Hellquist, 66, one of the true pioneers of gay activism and queer health advocacy in Canada, passed away unexpectedly in Saskatoon on Sept 28, 2013. His tireless efforts to create a better world for LGBT communities in Saskatchewan and across Canada have created ripples far beyond his home town. Many people have been profoundly touched by Gens’ support and strength over the years, starting early on with his founding of the first queer organization in Saskatoon in 1971 and most recently with the launch of the Queer Men’s Sexual Health Clinic at the city’s Avenue Community Centre in 2013. Among his many national activities, Gens led the creation of the Canadian Rainbow Health Coalition and served on the boards of several HIV and health organizations. Friends in Toronto and area who could not attend a memorial taking place this week in Saskatoon have organized a local event to celebrate Gens’ many contributions and to say good bye to a dear friend. The gathering will take place at The ArQuives (34 Isabella St between Yonge St and Church St) on Saturday, October 12, at 2:00 pm. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Avenue Community Centre to create a fund in his name: www.avenuecommunitycentre.ca/
