EVERY STORY,

EVERYWHERE

We are ready and able to tackle digital collections and digitized projects, and The ArQuives needs your help to invest in the infrastructure and software to take the next step in bringing communities together through increased digital access.

Every Story, Everywhere

Almost a decade ago, The ArQuives began the work of making the collection accessible through the introduction of our Online Collection Portal. It marked the first time that researchers could search our collections from schools, libraries, or even their homes. Today, over 10,000 people from around the world visit the Online Collection Portal to explore 2SLGBTQIA+ history every year.

We are currently expanding our digital collection to include the Anton Wagner and Edimburgo Cabrera fonds, and the Melissa Levin fonds. These two previously unseen collections include moving images, audio recordings, photographs, and documents, highlighting 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences from 1980 to 2010. This project highlights our commitment to expanding public access to underrepresented queer and trans histories.

Our Education Resources include downloadable Mini-Exhibitions, such as the Student & Youth LGBTQ2+ Activism exhibition. This exhibit, which showcases the work of people aged 29 or younger in 2SLGBTQIA+ activist movements from the seventies to the present, is currently on display at the Pierre Berton Resource Library in Vaughan through the month of June.

Help us continue to share the amazing stories of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in Canada by supporting The ArQuives today.

Digital Exhibitions

The HISTORYTELLERS Project

1948 – 2019

In 2025, Grade 10 Students from Garth Webb Secondary School, HDSB, accessed The ArQuives collections to create the award winning digital exhibit The HISTORYTELLERS Project. The digital collection and users are growing.

In their words:
“This project taught us not to hide our identities and to be proud of ourselves too. Our stories are meant to teach others to do the same. “

Queering Family Photography

1970 – 2018

This exhibit explores the critical work that queer, trans, and two-spirited family photos do in documenting and creating queer modes of belonging, and how our emotional attachments to queer family photographs have also sustained 2SLGBTQIA+ lives. Jim Egan: Canada’s First Public LGBTQ Activist

1921 – 2000

James Egan was one of the earliest LGBTQ2+ rights activists in Canada. He is best known for his landmark Supreme Court Case, Egan v. Canada. Although he was defeated in this case, his fight for spousal benefits spurred the Supreme Court to add sexual orientation as prohibited grounds of discrimination to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Education Resources

Our Education Resources were developed and crafted to support educators in incorporating queer and trans perspectives into Grade 9-12 English and History curricula.

Becoming 2SLGBTQIA+ Literate
