One of our longest-serving volunteers, Don McLeod, has launched his new book Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada: A Selected Annotated Chronology, 1976-1981. The chronological reference guide continues where his first volume concluded, revisiting some of the most noteworthy events and people involved in the fight for lesbian and gay rights in Canada in the years leading up to the bathhouse raids in Toronto and the emergence of the first press reports of AIDS. Don pays close attention to important political demonstrations and developments, as well as art and culture with significant lesbian or gay content. Each entry includes a carefully chosen bibliography of sources for further reading. Appendices list lesbian and gay organizations, periodicals, and bars and clubs that were active during this period. Don has worked as a volunteer at The ArQuives since 1984. He is the head of book and serials acquisitions at Robarts Library and the liaison librarian for Sexual Diversity Studies at the University of Toronto, where he received a Masters degree in Library Science. Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada: A Selected Annotated Chronology, 1976-1981 joins the ranks of other books, articles, and reviews Don has published, including A Brief History of GAY: Canada’s First Gay Tabloid, 1964-1966. We are thrilled that Don was able to use the collections at The ArQuives to inform his work, and we are grateful for his continued contributions to keeping our stories alive. Lesbian and Gay Liberation in Canada: A Selected Annotated Chronology, 1976-1981 is available for purchase at Glad Day Bookshop (499 Church St) or don.mcleod@utoronto.ca.
