Founded in 1973, The ArQuives has grown into one of the largest 2SLGBTQIA+ archives in the world. Beginning in 2026, The ArQuives will offer two research fellowships. The first, the Brian King Research Fellowship , is for scholars and artists located outside Toronto. The second, the Alan Miller Research Fellowship , is open to anyone worldwide, including those in the Greater Toronto Area.
In 2016, The ArQuives created The Brian King Fabulous Researcher Fund to honour the memory of former volunteer Brian King, one of the original Flashback Gala creators, whose enthusiasm and devotion to the organization remain legendary. Brian was known for his support for those just starting out in life, and this fund enables researchers to access our collections, particularly those who might not otherwise be able to travel to The ArQuives in Toronto.
In 2026, Alan Miller will enter his 50th year as a volunteer and supporter of The ArQuives, and we are commemorating this occasion with a new fellowship in his name. His dedication to the collections, particularly the periodical collection, is unmatched, and researchers from around the world have benefited from his commitment, knowledge, and support. This fellowship ensures that researchers will continue to benefit from his exceptional work for years to come.

Brian King Research Fellowship
The Brian King Research Fellowship supports scholars and artists located outside Toronto who seek to use The ArQuives’ collections. It is intended to help defray the costs of travel and lodging, and provide a platform to mobilize their research beyond the academy. The maximum stipend for this fellowship is $2,000, and research must take place in 2026. Awarded funds can be used for travel and accommodations, and no receipts are required. Recipients must acknowledge The ArQuives and the fellowship program in any resulting dissertation, publication, or project. A copy of the completed work or documentation of the project must be submitted to The ArQuives.
Alan Miller Research Fellowship
The Alan Miller Research Fellowship supports researchers conducting innovative research using The ArQuives’ collections. This new fellowship is intended to forge new relationships with scholars and artists (including in the Toronto area), while offering them a platform to mobilize their research beyond the academy. The maximum stipend for this fellowship is $2,000. Recipients must acknowledge The ArQuives and the fellowship program in any resulting dissertation, publication, or project. A copy of the completed work or documentation of the project must be submitted to The ArQuives.
Eligibility
Applications are open to Canadian and international scholars, graduate students, artists, cultural producers, and other independent researchers with an established research agenda who wish to conduct research at The ArQuives. Applications should explain the research project’s focus, methodology, and engagement with existing scholarship. They should also describe the intended research output and identify how The ArQuives’ collection(s) will be used during the proposed grant. Applicants new to The ArQuives’ collections are encouraged to consult our Online Collections Portal and Digital Exhibitions .

- Project proposal. (maximum 1000 words)
- Summary of the research materials you plan to consult during your visit to The ArQuives and how they are pertinent to your project. (maximum 500 words)
